Teams

The standard crew of a contemporary dragon boat consists of twenty paddlers (who sit in pairs facing the front – or bow – of the boat), a drummer or caller (who sits at the bow facing the paddlers), and a sweep (who stands at the rear – or stern – of the boat).

The sweep, or steersperson, uses a long oar to steer the boat, while the paddlers provide its propulsion. The drummer may be considered the heartbeat of the dragon boat, and leads the crew throughout a race with the rhythmic beating of a drum to indicate the cadence of paddling strokes: the paddlers attempt to make their strokes in unison, as synchronous paddling produces greater acceleration and speed.

Important to Remember

Registration fee and sponsorship include the boat, paddles, personal floatation device (PFD), and a steersperson/coach. Each team will have a designated area to “hang out” between races. It is suggested that teams bring folding chairs and pop-up tents (For an extra fee tents, chairs, and tables can be rented). Each team will have a practice/safety session during the week before the race.

Practice Schedule

All teams are required to practice at least once prior to race day. To book a practice time, send an email to smcginnis@signaturefoundation.org stating team name & preferred day/time. Practice times may be requested/booked after online registration has been submitted. (The earlier online registration is submitted, the better the chance of booking requested practice time.) If your level of sponsorship comes with a second practice, the second practice must occur prior to 5:00 p.m. Because of limited practice time, it is important that your team show up approximately 15 minutes prior to practice time.
